What’s new in our neighbourhood . . .

The redevelopment of St James’s Market is really taking shape and it is exciting to see the buildings and landscaping coming  to life. The development, which stretches between Regent St & St James’s and Haymarket will open as a new destination for London, providing over 261,000 sq ft of offices, shops and seven new restaurant spaces with outdoor seating. As well as pedestrianised streets, there will be a new public square and a dedicated taxi drop-off point behind St Albans House. The Crown Estate and global asset management company, The Carlyle Group are moving into office space on site and a number of retailers have already been confirmed, including: British fashion brand, Jigsaw, who will be opening a new concept store offering a full range of women’s and men’s clothing and accessories; upmarket cycling brand ASSOS; and the Italian fridge-maker, SMEG. Restaurant openings we hear will include: Aquavit, New York’s premier Nordic restaurant which currently holds Two Michelin stars; The Salt Yard, the Goodge Street Italian/Spanish Charcuterie Bar & Restaurant; and, the second UK Duck & Waffle – the original occupies the top of the Heron (Salesforce) Tower at 110 Bishopsgate. 48 Leicester Square, which occupies the site on the west side of the Square opposite the Odeon, is going to be providing 30,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space and LEGO will open its first central London standalone shop here (8,000 sq ft). Space is also under offer to existing tenants All Bar One and McDonald’s. Dover Street Market, which now occupies the Grade II Listed building at 18-22 Haymarket (the old Burberry building), has opened. The overall interior has been conceived by Commes des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo, however all the represented brands, who each have their own dedicated spaces, were given the freedom to design them as they saw fit. The building’s exterior, original ceilings, windows and central staircase have remained untouched. The third floor includes the Rose Bakery.
