Ken Morgan Survives The 2011 Round The Island Race

Ken Morgan took part (and survived!) the 2011 Round the Island Race, as part of a 5-man crew aboard the 32-foot Beneteau, Papillion. The boat, owned and skippered by Julian Smith of F&C REIT, took 8 hours and 50 minutes to complete the race, a record for the boat, if not the actual race! Some 1,900 entries took to the start line this year, which saw wind speeds gusting up to 34 knots and waves between 1.5m and 3m high – not for the feint-hearted or indeed those with a delicate constitution! The challenging conditions saw 436 boats retire from the race but, happily, the crew of Papillion bought her (and themselves) back to shore in one piece, finishing midway in their class, after avoiding 3 overturned catamarans and a couple of mad jet skiers!
